ORIGINAL: Metro Homicide investigators are searching for a suspect in a Sunday-morning shooting that claimed the life of one man and left one woman in critical condition.
In an interview with WSBT, 51-year-old Tony Shead's family says his death is a tragedy on several levels.
They say the suspect, 23-year-old Erique D. Raggs, was dating Shead's niece - and a fight they were having led to the shooting.
They say she was left in critical condition, and now they want Raggs to put an end to the police search.
"It's time to stop and put a halt to this," said Shead's aunt, Viola King. "I just beg the young man, please come in. Come in. We don't want to hurt you and we don't know anybody else who wants to hurt you."
To add to this incident. Family says they just lost Shead's brother, Quenton Freeman, when he was hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver who slammed into his moped three weeks ago. Read more about that here.
The shooting
Police say they received a call for reports of shots fired near Marine and Calvert just after midnight Sunday. When officers arrived, they found a vehicle in the 1400 block of Calvert that had been shot at.
Investigators say six people -- including Shead, the niece and Shead's daughter -- were in the van at the time. Officers found Shead had died from his injuries.
"By the grace of God, as bad as this is, two people could've very well been six dead people," Homicide Commander Tim Corbett said in a press conference Sunday.
The niece was taken to Memorial Hospital where after surgery she is listed in critical condition. Police say her injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.
Police have now named Raggs as the main suspect in this shooting.
"He should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Don't approach him. Don't talk to him if you see him. Call South Bend police, Mishawaka police, wherever you are, so we can get him in custody," Corbett said.
An autopsy for Shead is scheduled for Monday.
This is South Bend's 10th homicide of the year.
