A chance to help those in need thanks to the generosity of some local high school students.

The Vet Tech class from the Elkhart Area Career Center donated 300 pounds of meat to the food pantry at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Edwardsburg.

The meat comes from pigs the class raised themselves.

The church serves hungry families in northern Indiana and southern Michigan and the students say they're proud to help.

“We didn't really have a use for it, and even if we did we felt that this would be the best thing to do -- help people who are in need, who are hungry, who can't afford food. And we just really wanted to give back to the community,” said Ashley Asher, Elkhart Memorial high school senior.

The students brought ham, bacon, and sausage Friday.

The class is also working on a project to collect and donate milk to the food pantry.
