Family: 6 year old in a coma after being found at bottom of pool during swimming lesson
DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) - A family member said a 6-year-old boy is in a coma after he was found at the bottom of a pool during a swimming lesson Thursday.
Willie Hamilton had been taking his grandson Niguel Hamilton to swim lessons at the Lohrey Rec Center since June.
“He had probably taken about five all together," said Hamilton.
He said three life guards were working as 6-year-old Niguel participated in a swimming lesson at the Lohrey Rec Center on Glenarm Avenue. At the end of the lesson, a girl asked the grandfather if he'd seen the little boy, and he told her that he hadn't.
"I’m like what do you mean where is? He’s in the pool," said Hamilton.
They then searched for the little boy, and he was reportedly found 15 minutes later at the bottom of the pool. His grandfather said Niguel is brain dead.
But his grandfather says that doesn't take away from the fact that he is a loving kid who looked forward to swimming.
"You know he wanted to try hard and he always said Papa I’m going to try hard, I’m not going to hold onto that rail, I'm going to swim,” said Hamilton.
So far, the city of Dayton said they are not releasing any information about the incident. Officials did say that the center was open Friday, but the pool was closed.
