Man arrested for allegedly trying to set his mom on fire in New Mexico
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KDBC) — A man from Las Cruces, New Mexico was arrested for allegedly trying to set his mother on fire, according to the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies arrested 27-year-old Johnny Jimenez on Monday.
Officials were called out around 3 p.m.
Investigators found that Jimenez became upset with his mother after she “looked at him like he was stupid.”
The mother, who was in a wheelchair, told investigators her son got mad after she asked him to help her cook for her 63rd birthday, which was on Monday.
The mother told investigators her son allegedly slammed her head into a washing machine, causing her to fall out of her wheelchair, and then poured kerosene on her, trying to set her on fire.
Jimenez tried using a lighter to ignite the fluid but failed.
The mother told officials she was left in the floor for several hours without her phone, which she said her son took away from her.
The mother’s daughter went by her mom’s house to drop off a birthday card when she found her mother on the floor. She reportedly confronted her brother and called 911.
Jimenez is charged with one count of attempted aggravated battery against a household member with a deadly weapon and interference with communication.
Jimenez is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center without bond.
