Burger King Outstanding Student Athlete: LaVille's Luke Beehler

"I was just thinking it was any other season. Getting ready for every game, one game at a time," said junior guard Luke Beehler.

But the 2017-2018 season was anything but that for the Lancers. LaVille sits at 23-0 headed into tournament play. Their first perfect regular season in school history.

Head Coach Michael Edison said, "We've had some big wins and in the locker room afterwards, the guys are just sort of business like. And I like that. They just don't get too high or too low and that's just a credit to the leaders I've got on this team."

Beehler added, "I think this is a very unselfish team. We find each other, whoever has the hot hand at different times."

It's been Beehler's hot hand that has kept the Lancers on track.

Most recently in their crucial Hoosier North Athletic Conference battle with Knox, where the game was tied up at 49 with seconds left on the clock and Beehler drove inside and lifted the Lancers to a win.

It not only kept LaVille's perfect season in tact, but they grabbed their first outright conference title in over 30 years.

"We actually had a play drawn up and it kind of fell apart a little bit, and Luke just did what we've tried to get him to do and kind of took over and decided to drive to the hoop and took it in strong and was able to finish. When Luke is being aggressive, like he did to the end of the Knox game, when he does that, good things tend to happen to us," said Edison.

Although they will already go down in school history with that perfect regular season mark, the No. 3 Lancers' real test begins this week.

They take on No. 2 Westview in the Class 2A Sectional semifinal Friday night.

Edison said, "We're just going to try to execute better than they execute. It might come down to some key plays. We're just going to try and scratch and claw and try our best to stay in that game and have a chance at the end."
