Johnson's clutch shot leads Benton Harbor to State Title
East Lansing, MI —
With one shot, Benton Harbor sophomore Carlos "Scooby" Johnson wiped out a title drought almost five decades in the making.
Benton Harbor defeated Grand Rapids Catholic Central 65-64 in the MHSAA Class B State Championship game on Saturday.
After Catholic Central's Darell Belcher missed one of two free throws with 20 seconds left and the Tigers trailing 64-62, senior point guard Elijah Baxter drove down and handed off to the 6-foot-6 sophomore who drained the three point attempt with 12 seconds remaining. Catholic Central rushed down the court for one last attempt that fell short.
The clutch basket gave Johnson a game-high 24 points and Benton Harbor their first State Championship in boys basketball since 1965.
