A big change in the landscape of high school sports in northern Indiana became official Wednesday, July 11th 2018.

Mishawaka High School s leaving the NIC and has accepted an invitation to join the NLC in the fall of 2020.

The NLC has been looking to add an 8th member to replace Elkhart Memorial, which will be leaving the conference when Memorial and Central merge into a single school in two years.

Mishawaka principal Jerome Calderone said, "This is a big move for our school. We put a lot of time, effort and research into changing conferences. We consulted with Mishawaka legends who have been leaders for decades."

The NLC used the following criteria when selecting their new and eighth member: existing values and vision of the NLC, facilities and enrollment, display of academic and athletic excellence, sports offered at the potential member school, geographic location.

"We also met with all 19 of our varsity coaches before making an application to the NLC. We appreciate the strong relationships we have with schools from the NIC, and we look forward to developing those same bonds in the Northern Lakes," Calderdone added, "2020 will be an exciting time for all Cavemen."
