The Friday Night Lights will shine a whole lot brighter in South Bend this fall.

The South Bend School Board approved a proposal to renovate School Field. The 1.2 million dollar project includes replacing the old grass field with an artificial playing surface. The old lights will also be replaced by a state o the art lighting system by the same company that installed the lights at Notre Dame Stadium.

"This is clear evidence that the board, the superintendent, and administrative team is committed to providing the best resources possible on the playing and classrooms for our student athletes Corporation wide," SBCSC athletic director Seabe Gavin told WSBT22 Thursday night.

The 90-year old football stadium on Eddy Street was in dire need of an upgrade.

School Field serves as the home football stadium for both South Bend Adams and South Bend Washington high schools.

Following the upgrade, Gavin tells WSBT22 he'd also welcome Riley and Clay to play there as well, on the nights the stadium isn't in use. Riley currently plays its home games at Jackson Intermediate and Clay at Clay Intermediate.

The project is expected to be done by August 1st, in time for this upcoming season.
