Bulldozers and backhoes drove on to Rice Field at Elkhart Central High School on Tuesday morning. Their mission? To uproot the grass at the legendary playing field to make way for new artificial field turf.

"It is crazy you spend a lot of time out here and obviously the grass field has been here for a long time at Rice Field, This morning the field was all here and by the time the sun goes down it'll be gone. " said Central HEad Football Coach Josh Shattuck as he surveyed the excavation.

The transformation is scheduled to be complete before the Blazers home opener on August 24 against Goshen.

It shows how important football is here in Elkhart and obviously we're trying to do our part on the field as coaches and players and an athletic department to make that happen." said Shattuck, "Its just a source of community pride, and some big upgrades will make it better for the players, the fans and the community so its really awesome."
